Onetime landlady Mrs Pullen insisted that the pub was haunted by the ghost of a Roman centurian in full battledress. He has (allegedly) been seen crossing the Strood (which would have been difficult as the Strood did not exist in Roman times). During the heydays of smuggling - contraband was hidden in the Peldon Pub's pond in weighted barrels. |

| Chequers Inn Church Street - Goldhanger Main dining area - food served 7 days a week three separate drinking areas Real ale - warm welcome The Chequers started as a Court House - anyone tried and sentenced here was executed outside and buried in the churchyard next door - very efficient. The Collector of Taxes would make the occasional visit to collect taxes and rents from the villagers. A board of black and white squares would be used to count the money - an early calculator. At the turn of the century Prince Nicholas of Russia stayed here while on a hunting trip. |
