The Peldon Rose suffered damage during the Essex earthquake (1884) when the chimney stack fell through the roof and the walls bulged out - the poor old place was in a sorry state. Onetime landlady Mrs Pullen insisted that the pub was haunted by the ghost of a Roman centurian in full battledress. He has (allegedly) been seen crossing the Strood (which would have been difficult as the Strood did not exist in Roman times). During the heydays of smuggling - contraband was hidden in the Peldon Pub's pond in weighted barrels.

a converted barn suitable for parties During the Napoleonic Wars - 1798 - a meeting was held to decide how they could annoy the French as much as possible. When peace with the French was announced the Whalebone held a party which lasted three days - a whole ox stuffed with potatoes was roasted outside - matters got a bit out of hand and the drunken mob (it says) took the food "out of the mouths of even those gentlemen who were eating it" Tut! Tut! Opposite is a pond where people fish and a giant oak tree - reputedly grown from an acorn placed in the mouth of a highwayman or pirate who was executed locally. Thankfully Fingringhoe is a nice quiet place today!!
