West Mersea Neighbourhood Plan
As with previous financial years West Mersea Town Council has budgeted in 2022/23 to continue its programme of much needed improvements to its estate and facilities; at the same time including a provision for a 4 day celebration of the Queen's Platinum Jubilee. The budgeted spend and anticipated income has resulted in an increase of 3.79% in the precept over last year, equivalent to 33p monthly increase on a Band D property.
Carried forward from the 2021/21 budget is some £54,000 of unspent income which has been earmarked for specific projects in the 2022/23 budget. At the end of this financial year we anticipate strengthening our reserves by some £40,000 to cover current liabilities in respect of pre-paid burial fees, and to go towards a sinking fund for additional cemetery land and other longer term major capital schemes.
The Council remains conscious of the need to future-proof its financial position by strengthening reserves in preparation for the possible introduction of Referendum Rules by Her Majesty's Government restricting future precept increases (deferred for 2022/23). In addition to provide for increased costs from the potential devolution of certain services from Essex County Council to parishes. Failure by West Mersea Town Council to take appropriate action now would inevitably jeopardise future services and the general well-being of its open spaces and facilities. Unfortunately there are also serious inflation costs to take into account and whilst the Council continues to reduce costs and increase efficiency, wherever possible, our options for doing so are now very limited.
As always residents are most welcome to attend the 3 weekly Council Meetings when questions may be asked during the public session. Agendas are posted on the Council website and noticeboards. The public are also welcome to attend the various committee meetings which are periodically announced. To view the meetings page: click here
